Skate UK - Grade 8

Below is a breakdown of the requirements for progressing through the 10 stages of Skate UK

"At this point the skater must be proficient with the concept of gliding on the ice with ease. More skating turns and changes of edge are introduced"

    Forward inside mohawk
From the basic standing position with the left leg and arm leading, push onto a left forward inside curve, witht he free leg stretched to the back. Bring the in-step of the right free leg to the heel of the left skating foot forming a T position. Keeping both feet extended but not too stiff, transfer onto the right back inside edge. The arms should be held parallel to the ice at the side of the body with the same arms free leg extended in line with each other over the tracing.

Two backward crossovers, followed by sustained backward outside curve (count of 3)
On completion of the second crossover, push from a right back inside edge onto a glide on the left back outside edge. Your arms should remain facing into the circle to help maintain the curve, left side leading in a clockwise direction. Repeat in the opposite direction on the alternate foot.

Two foot change of edge on a large curve
Gather speed by using basic pushes. Bring your feet together and glide along in a straight line. Your arms should be held out at the side, keep your feet together and both knees bent. Place one foot onto an outside edge and the other foot onto an inside edge to create a curve. Rise in the knees to allow change of edge on both feet. Re-bend the knees to continue momentum along the curve.

    Forward Drag
From moving forward glide on two feet to prepare balance and posture. Keep your arms held out to the side. Glide onto one foot on the flat of the blade with the free leg extended to the back. Deeply bend the skating leg until the free leg is dragging on the ice on the inside of the boot. Keep your back strong and upright and ensure that the knee and foot of the skating leg are kept in a vertical line.
