Skate UK - Grade 2
Below is a breakdown of the requirements for progressing through the 10 stages of Skate UK
"The primary goal at this level is to introduce basic skating concepts. The skater should have already established an ease of movement on the ice int he previous level. The concept of lean will be introduced in this level"
Moving Backwards
Stand with feet in an inverted V with toes together, keep your knees slightly bent and maintain posture. Lifting alternate feet take small steps backwards placing the toe of the lifted foot to the instep of the skating foot. Allow the edges to glide on each foot.
Snowplough Stop Half or Full
From moving forwards gather speed into a two foot glide with feet close together, bend your knees and turn toes towards each other. Apply pressure to the inside edges of both feet to cause a skid. Continue the skid until you come to a full stop. For a half snowplough stop you will only turn one foot keeping your weight over your skating foot and applying pressure to the front foot to create a skid.
Foward Skating
As a progression from the basic forward movements learned in level 1, begin in a standing position. Use both knees to bend and push to produce a strong flowing edge. Maintain good posture to assist with the gliding action, stretch the free leg to develop a stronger push and longer gliding positions.
Two Foot Glide on a Curve
From moving fowards bring both feet together into a two foot glide. Glide with your feet kept together and knees slightly bent, turn your body in the direction of the curve and lean your body slightly toward the centre of the circle. Maintain a curve on both feet with good posture.
